Sue asked us whether or not our photographs accurately reflect what our life is like (or something like that, I'm too lazy to go back and look at the exact question). It's hard to say for sure. Part of my interest in this project was to "document", for lack of a better word, this year at home, with all the big changes that were happening. The truth is the photos don't necessarily reflect the day-to-day.

I don't, for instance, have a photo of me on Monday carrying all three of my children at once (two in slings, one on my back) up the street from the streetcar stop because the Toronto Transit Commission is all but inaccessible with a stroller (and I'm lucky, I can't even imagine what it must be like with a wheelchair or other accessibility device), and my just-six year-old was in a mild state of shock after her vaccination. In fact, I have very few photos of me carrying any of my children, even though it's how I spend about 90% of time.

I don't have a photo at all from the day when I had a complete breakdown, shortly after a friend gently reminded me that I don't have to do *everything* and shortly before another friend called me to do labour support at the birth of her child. That's #191. And in the spirit of Sue's question, I'm not posting a replacement.

The truth is, the moments which are most indicative of my life this year are the moments when I am least able (or willing) to pick up a camera. It's just as difficult to capture the joy I feel in hearing Joe sing a totally inappropriate song to babies over the baby monitor. Or the laughter shared when we discovered that big sister shouting letters of the alphabet elicited giggles from six month-old infants. Or a quiet moment where Joe and I promised that we would find the time to be friends, lovers and co-conspirators again, rather than just partners in the business of child-wrangling.

But it's all there, in a way.

Not much to say today. I'm finding it easier to remember to either (a) find the time to pick up the camera at opportune moments or (b) make some time during the day to concentrate on photo-taking. I did an entire study of my daughter's accordion and case earlier today. I am quite proud of a number of the photos I took and will likely post them as a set on Flickr.

I think the best one is the last one. I knew today had to be an accordion photo since it was her first day of lessons. She's been over the moon that she has the chance to take these lessons and her enthusiasm hasn't died since her lesson this afternoon. I was really excited this afternoon when her teacher played "Moon River" (a long-standing lullaby in our house) on the accordion and my daughter was moved to accompany her on the piano (she has no idea how to play) that was in the room...

I hear the blog went offline for a while...I've been using an old work e-mail address as my account name for a long time and I imagine the address has now expired, causing Blogger to freak out and shut everything down until I gave them a real e-mail address. Everything should be in working order now.

I'm feeling very...wintery...lately. Like I want to just gather up my loved ones and tumble into a torpor under the slanted ceiling of our third floor bedroom.

Alas, work and school call two of our number forth, and so shuttling, cooking and shopping cannot be stricken from my to-do list, despite the fact that I carry two fifteen-pound phoretic organisms with me everywhere I go. And though the snow that we are expecting this winter is bound to slow me even further than my rapidly-growing children, I was pleased to see so much of it on the weekend and further pleased that it stayed, which it so rarely does in this city any more.

I know I've been absent for a long time (almost two months since I've posted a photo). I have continued snapping photos but have found little time to choose, edit and post them, not to mention commenting on other people's photos. I'm going to try to get better at all of those things as Project 365 progresses.

One of the challenges I face is that my life is both busy and routine. I don't vary that routine much these days and, even if I do, I'm not finding the time to capture things in photographs. I'm sure many of you feel the same way...I feel I'm recycling themes and subjects a lot these days. My resolution for myself is try to seek out a little more variety.

I will not post 60 photos here today. If you want to see the last two months' worth of my photos, you can find me on Flickr as Snapped Ps. (I'll be uploading them there over the next few days.) I will, however, try to post here more regularly, starting now. And to visit your spaces more often.

I'm not a big fan of modified photos, but sometimes I think that I've got to fool around as much as I can with this project, even if it's just a way to keep things interesting. The first photo has not been modified in the slightest (except to crop it to the standard size at which I've been cropping all my photos, which is slightly less on the long axis than the photo the camera takes). The second photo, I have posted both versions. I like the first, but felt like it needed...something...to convey what I was trying to with the photo. Mainly because I could not capture the peeling paint on the wall or the shadow of the music stand. So am I using photoshop tools to make up for what I lack as a photographer? Perhaps. But I'm comfortable with that.

Dia De Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is approaching, and with it the annual celebration of the "Night of the Dread" in our local park. It is a night during which we face and shout, "Booooo!!!!" at our fears. Our eldest daughter was so pleased with the whole thing, she's been looking forward to it all year, and for months has been asking to go dressed as Sadie the Skeleton Fairy (a fairy of her own invention).

Today we started gathering things for her costume, and I made her a Sadie the Skeleton Fairy shirt. The choice of fabric was inspired by the colourful skulls that feature in many Day of the Dead celebrations. Here is the shirt mid-process...

My daughter has been calling weather vanes "wind tunnels" for weeks and I keep trying to correct her, but have been unable to call up the proper name. Ah, sleep deprivation. Today (I admit I took not a single photo yesterday) as I was walking down an alley alone and saw this one and the word came to me immediately. I find I have a harder time remembering the names of things if an inaccurate name has been suggested to me. I'd have an easier time if someone said, "What are those things called...?"

I was sick and alone (if you count being responsible for the well-being of three children, a dog and a cat alone) for much of the week, so you'll find that my camera only once strayed from our house in the last five days.

The one outdoor shot is of an intriguing and decaying poster on the wall of my daughter's school. It was clearly a pony at one time, with anti-smoking signs all over it. I don't know quite what to make of it, but I'm particularly proud of the photo because I took it with my zoom lens and no tripod or timer. Not a good way to start a week in which our prompt was later to be revealed as 'craft', but what the hay (snicker).

As far as craft goes, I feel as Sue does in that I never seem to find the time to do the reading/research I need to do to improve my photography. Photo #72 was fraught with particular frustration. I had been lying for a couple of hours on a day bed (the same day bed in Photo #71) bathed in the afternoon light, staring out the window at tree branches dancing in a bright blue sky. Then I noticed my reflection in the sunglasses on the window sill and thought the whole scene would make a wonderful photo. The bright sun in the window made it impossible to capture the scene outside, and made the entire photo brighter than I would have liked. I find it odd that, time and time again, I need to learn that the camera does not "see" in the same way that my eye does. How infuriating!

I really wanted to make this photo look kind of classic, so I tooled around a bit in Photoshop. Using the "Film Grain" filter, adjusting the gradient map to pure black and white and fooling with some of the light settings made it seem older. It also makes the label "FREE" on the seat pop a little bit, which (I flatter myself) contributes to the bitter sweetness of the tiny trike among the detritus...

My cousin, Sam, gave this cookie jar to Joe and I for our wedding over six years ago. He was so pleased to be giving us a gift that he picked out himself and was so sure that we would love it that we both couldn't help but fall in line. Tonight, it's filled with tasty vegan cookies I made because I'm cutting out dairy in the hopes that it will help to solve my infant son's reflux.

I also used a couple of tricks from the photography book Joe bought me. I used the timer and a makeshift tripod to try to get a really crisp image. I did change the levels on this photo in Photoshop because the white balance on the camera just doesn't seem to work out right for the lighting in our kitchen. Joe tells me that there is a way to set a custom white balance on the camera, so that's the next thing I have to figure out.

My eldest daughter started circus classes yesterday. She was born in the year of the monkey and she certainly lives up to it physically. We tried to find parkour classes for her, but I assume no one's willing to take on the risk of teaching kids to scale buildings, so circus classes it is.

It was a choice between this and a photo of her full body on the trapeze, but Joe pointed out that the angle of her head and the placement of the trapeze wires made it look like she'd been hanged. Alrighty, then.

Like Sue, I've felt a little sheepish at my own use of a particular subject over and over again in my photos, but sometimes it's just so hard to resist:

I can't quite decide why the first is better than the second. Or rather, they're both good, but for different reasons...the light in the first is better and yet the second has her framed by the leaves and with such a genuine smile (which is hard to get out of her these days) that it's just so charming. Still, the sunlight is hard to beat.

Today's photo is a close-up of the half-mannequin that friends have hanging on their front porch, but I didn't pay close enough attention to the background as I shot it. So that is one of my goals from here on out: pay closer attention to what is in the background, and to shadows that may distract from the photo's subject.

A Fair-y Tale

Today was one of those days where there were a number of photos to choose from. We ended up at the Canadian National Exhibition last night for a few hours, and there were ample opportunities for photos.

That fine novel by Jane Urquhart was set not far from where we we've been staying the last five days, on a property a little ways from the hustle and bustle of daily urban life. Falling Behind

For my birthday, Joe got me a book on photography. It's a pragmatic book with a guide to the automated settings on most cameras as well as more detailed explanations on how to play with settings and get creative. I've spent the better part of this week trying to figure some of this stuff out. I don't always love the results that I get from the automated settings, but it's certainly interesting reading. I am glad to understand more about what the settings are meant to do and then try to figure how to get the photo exactly as I want it.

I will be going away for the next five days and may not have an opportunity to visit or post, but I hope to do so soon after my return. All the best to all of you!

We were away at a wedding for the weekend. One of the best weddings I've ever attended. It was the marriage of a good friend of Joe's, a musician, and his partner, who is a dancer. I love this photo because it captures so much about this couple. The fabulous attire, designed especially for them, her incredibly strong calf muscle and the bandages on her ankles (I'm assuming they are new shoes), his trademark hat. It's blurry, but it is still the best photo of the day.

I never use a flash. Which means I never get photos of all the bush parties I attend. Such a shame, really.

But seriously, every time I've tried to use a flash the photo sucks. People look washed out, or I've drawn attention to something in the foreground of the shot instead of what I focused on. So tonight I decided to do a little experimenting.

I took almost a 100 photos of this damn thing, trying to capture it the way that I was seeing it. The neighbours probably think we're having a dance party on our deck. It would be kind of a sad dance party, as it's a small deck. Sort of like most of the bush parties I have attended.

I wasn't entirely successful (there are some artifacts from the flash close to the edges of the toy), but it was an interesting learning experience. I feel like my camera and I have gotten to know each other a little better...(alright, enough with the party references, already, show the damn photo).

So, I told myself that when it came down to two photos in a single day, I would choose the one that best represented what we were doing that day. Yesterday we were blueberry picking and I captured my eldest through the bushes. I love the photo, but I also really loved a photo I took on the farm of old metal parts that were rusting in an old cart. I want to post it, but I've cheated too many times already, posting photos that are not photos of the day...so, here posterity wins out over art.

That said, here I am posting multiple versions of a single photo. As I said in my previous post, I'm really working on getting the shot right from the start, rather than using Photoshop to clear up my blunders. Here's an example, though, of the difference that is made. We were out walking today and it was a sunny day, so I and the stroller sought refuge in the shade while Joe picked up a coffee. Unfortunately, the shade also covered the subject of my photo. It's much nicer once it's fixed up. I couldn't stop there, so I made it black & white as well.

017:365: Someone's At the Gate

P.S. For those of you who asked about white balance: I have a digital SLR camera, a Canon Rebel. You can set white balance for different situations, for example, full sun, shade, cloudy days, fluorescent lighting, etc. My layman's understanding of it is that it "tells" the camera what to consider white. In my last post, I had accidentally set the WB to shade when I was actually in a room under fluorescent lights. That made everything in the photo appear much more blue. I'm thinking of getting a little pocket guide to this stuff to help me figure out the day to day stuff.

Tomorrow's challenge: I am not allowed to take my SLR camera to the concert I'm attending. Point-and-shoot cameras only. We'll see how I can apply what I've learned so far with my old point-and-shoot.

I decided that one of my goals for this project is to understand my camera and its functions well enough to take a good photo right off. I often rely on Photoshop to fix the light and colour in my photographs, and I'd like to rely on it less. Today's photo of the day was taken on the wrong white balance setting, but I like the way the photo turned out, nonetheless. I'm hoping you'll also feel it fits the prompt for this week: BOLD.

So, Sue asked whether or not we choose the best photos of the day or the photos that best represent our day. Yesterday I definitely opted for the photo that represented our day. I was sitting on the living room floor, watching the endless, jerking dance of my two month-old twins, and musing about the litany of questions our twins inspire. It always starts with, "Oh my god! Are they twins?" The next question is usually about their sexes and whether they are identical or not. It amazes me the number of people who don't realise that boy-girl twins cannot be identical. And then I was struck by their belly-buttons. They were made in exactly the same way, but are totally different. I wanted to capture that moment of realisation for me...

But, I digress. In truth, I barely looked at the other photos of the day because, frankly, it wasn't a day I'm particularly proud of. The best photo of the day is the one below, taken at the mall. Hardly a moment worthy of preservation. Still, I offer it to you today, to keep myself honest...and because I nearly cheated and posted it as today's photo when I saw it today.

Both yesterday and today I took some shots of a morning glory which is part of our little garden on our deck. Yesterday's shot comes first, and today's shot is my photo of the day. What surprised me (I'm not much of a gardener) was how different the flower looked on the different days. I would love to know what determines how the flower closes on any given day.

Decisions, Decisions

A long walk today took us past many of the hidden treasures of the concrete jungle. I've never had a great eye for shooting architecture or the urban landscape in general. I find it easy to see beauty in the natural, but am less quick to recognise the beauty of man-made objects. So I decided to challenge myself. The results were less than inspiring.

I like the colours, but not the composition or the lighting of this photo. I have a feeling that a better photographer than I could have made something magical with this subject.

This is Joe's pick for my photo of the day. I like the lines in the photo and the way the focal point is in the centre of the photo; both the foreground and the background are out of focus. I especially like that the table legs are in focus underneath the out-of-focus rail in the foreground, but I feel like it's lacking some...oomph.

I like it better in black and white, though.

So I settled on this one as my photo of the day. I like the heft of the Diebold lock, and the rust in the words at the top of the photo. I like the angle at which I took the photo but I do wish that I had a lens that enabled me to take that particular shot with all of the words in focus. Does that mean it needs a longer focal length? It's been a long time since first year Physics...

This was the second ripe tomato from the tomato plant which is part of the deck-level garden that my eldest daughter and her grandmother started in the week after our twins were born. Grandma rightly thought that my daughter might need something for which she felt particularly responsible.

This photo is my photo of the day, but it also serves as part of a series of photos that said daughter has requested for her room: a series that includes a close-up of a half a red cabbage and rhubarb slices.

We spent the morning in Kensington Market today and there were ample opportunities for snapping photos. One thing I learned was that an interesting subject doesn't always make for an interesting photo. Consider the following, which was only a small part of a collection of bits and signs at someone's gate:

In the end, my photo of the day was from the ride home. The idea is simpler, even sort of cliché, but I think the space on the right created by the bright sun makes the photo.

Jilly-Come-Lately

So my friend, Sue, had this excellent idea to start a Project 365 crew two days ago.
I signed on today. It takes me a little while, but eventually I come around.

Thankfully, I have had a few good reasons to be snapping a lot of photos lately, so I have something to contribute.

Sue is also providing weekly prompts that we might follow. The prompt for this week is sustenance. Luckily, the two photos that I had taken so far fit that theme. Witness:
