You're right - put it in black and white and suddenly the picture is all about those diagonal wires that were virtually invisible in the colour version. I found the same thing with my photo of all the idiots walking along the cliff past the "Do Not Go Past This Sign" sign - the colour was distracting because the picture wasn't about colour.
The other time I used the sepia function was for my self-portrait, and that was basically just a way to hide. Most of my photos, I think, ARE about colour.
